Justice Ramana hails from Ponnavaram village in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. He enrolled as an Advocate on February 10, 1983. He has practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals and the Supreme Court of India. He has specialized in Constitutional, Criminal, Service and Inter-State River laws. Justice Ramana has also functioned as Panel Counsel for various Government Organizations; and has served as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government, and the Standing Counsel for Railways in the Central Administrative Tribunal at Hyderabad. He was an Additional Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh.

Justice Ramana was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2000 and was the Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court for two months in 2013. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in September 2013, and three months later, was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Notable Judgements:

He was a part of the bench at the Supreme Court, with Justice Ranjan Gogoi, which held that women cannot not become a Karta of a joint family, though they can be the managers in some particular circumstances. The bench also held that the expression ‘manager’ can be understood as denoting a role distinct from that of the Karta.

He was part of the bench at the Supreme Court with Justice Gogoi, which held held that appointments ofArchakas in temples will have to be made in accordance with the Agamas (treatises pertaining to matters like construction of temples; installation of idols and conduct of worship of the Deity), but more importantly, subject to conformity with Constitutional mandates and principles.

He was a part of the bench with Justice A.K. Sikri which upheld the principle of “relevant turnover” for determination of penalties in competition law contraventions; and settled a critical issue in India’s antitrust jurisprudence, which was heavily debated amongst all stakeholders for over five years.
